Coconuco Thermal Springs

So we decided to head up over the winding mountain roads to the thermal pools near Coconuco. The journey takes around 45 minutes from Popayan on quite uneven roads and offers some more incredible views on the way up.

The thermal pools are nestled in the mountainside and there is a waterslide, a cold pool with fish, two hot pools and a mud bath on offer. The water in the pools is naturally heated by the surrounding volcanic rock.

It seems that for the locals, the hot springs are a social hangout area on the weekends as there were a lot of families, young couples and bottles of Aguardiente floating around. The whole scene evoked memories of nature documentaries in which Japanese Macaques  would relax in hot mountain pools and groom each other.
